Intro to Deep Tissue – Part One – Upper Body
This Introduction to Deep Tissue (Upper Body) course begins with an overview of the fundamentals of deep tissue therapy including assessment; biomechanics; proper use of fingers, knuckles, fist, forearm, elbow and thumbs; and specific massage strokes and techniques for the upper body including the back, abdomen, shoulder girdle, chest, arms, neck and face. Deep tissue techniques are generally designed for more focused massage work. Working a specific joint, muscle or muscle group, the massage therapist can learn to access deeper layers of the soft tissue. Starting superficially and easing into the depth of the muscle slowly often allows more movement. If the pressure is applied too deeply or too quickly, the muscle may tighten to protect that area, and unnecessary damage or inflammation can be induced. Very little lubricant is used as the pressure doesn't travel much over the skin. This course is designed to supplement basic massage skills to work effectively with localized tensions, injury and emotional holding patterns. This class is designed to be immediately incorporated with present massage skills to allow you to work deeply, safely and with ease. In this experiential class, working in pairs, there will be opportunities to experience practical applications of the benefits of Deep Tissue Therapy for the Upper Body as you are guided with individualized tableside assistance. 6 hours of CE credit.
